Modes feel confusing because most explanations miss the point

Most guitarists learn that modes exist, nod along, then go back to playing the same pentatonic box. Not because they're not serious, but because the explanations are either too abstract ("it's just a rotation of the major scale") or too overwhelming.

What you actually need is to see the mode on the fretboard — in every position you already know — and understand what chord it fits over. That's exactly what this guide does.

"I know modes exist but I can't hear when to use them"

Each mode page shows the chord function and relative modes, so you always know the musical context.

"Theory diagrams don't translate to the guitar neck"

Every scale degree is shown directly on a fretboard grid — no translation needed.

"I only know one box shape for each mode"

All 5 CAGED positions plus the 3-note-per-string pattern are mapped for every single mode.

"I forget which modes are major and which are minor"

Triads and seventh chords are shown on every page so the quality is instantly clear.

What's inside

All seven modes, fully mapped in every position

Each mode is presented in three different contexts so you can practise recognising the shapes independently of the tonic note.

• Single-string vision diagram — see the whole mode across one string before learning the shapes

All 5 CAGED positions (E, C, G, D, A shapes) with scale degrees clearly numbered

3-note-per-string pattern from the Root — essential for speed and shifting

Scale formula with whole/half step map across the top

Triads and seventh chords for every degree in the key

Relative modes shown so you see how modes connect to each other

Available extensions/tensions labelled (9, 11, 13 etc.)

Clean print-friendly design — stick it on your music stand

Every copy of the guide includes three versions — so you can learn from the full reference, print the black & white version for your music stand, and use the blank edition to reinforce what you've learned by filling in the scale notes yourself.

Common questions

What format is the guide?

A multi-page PDF, optimised for both screen viewing and home printing. The layout is designed to look great on A4 or US Letter paper.

Do I need to know music theory already?

You should be comfortable with the major scale and have some familiarity with the CAGED system. If you're completely new to theory, check out the beginner resources in the shop first (CAGED Clarity / The Guitarist's Guide To The Circle of Fifths).

Does this cover modes in minor keys?

The guide covers all 7 modes of the major scale. Aeolian (the natural minor scale) is fully included, and each mode page shows how it relates to the other modes in the system.

Can I use this with my students?

The licence covers personal use and use in private lessons. Please don't redistribute the file publicly or resell it.
